2.3.2 Ranches as Grassland conservation
1. Exploratory
The purpose of this podcast is to educate the public on how much the grasslands are being affected. Ed Robertson of mountain and prairie podcast is interviewing Jim Howell. Jim Howell is the CEO of Grasslands LLC. There are alot of ranch conservation organizations, however Grasslands LLC is different because the conserve through "Holistic Management". Holistic Management is more diverse and profitable than just a basic ranch conservation because they focus on 4 aspects. 1. Financial profit 2.cultural awareness 3.economic growth 4. ecological standpoint.
2. Diagnostic
Probe motives or causes. (Why?(Tell your reader why this occurs. Explain the causes in detail.))
Alan Savery is the genius who came up with the idea of holistic management because he not only wanted to preserve nature, but make money at the same time. Our planet hsa over 12 Billion acres of grassland, and it is the most under conserved environment in the entire world.
3. Cause and Effect
Causal relationships between ideas, actions, or events. (If __________ occurs, what happens?)
Because we humans are over running animals homes, we are forcing them to group together into small areas. These areas are then filled with animal feces and decay that they then move locations and go ruin somewhere else.... so basically everywhere is being ruined. So what they are doing is that they are going around to the places that seem unsavable and they are going and basically laying too good of food or situation for grazing animals to pass up... causing them to come back and forcing nature to fix itself.
4. Priority
Seek to identify the most important issue. (What is the most important issue?)
Our main priority that we need to focus on is to slow down on so much development. We legit clear out prairie grasslands to plant farms. That is wild go somewhere else!!! Another issue that we are facing that we need to tackle down on are exotic weed species coming into our land and messing up our ecosystems.
5. Application
Probe for relationships and connect theory to practice. (How does this apply to you? How is this related to culture as we have studied so far?)
I would say that this applies to me because I ignorantly walk on grass all of the time when there are stepping stones or a sidewalk I could easily be stepping on. I do not really think this relates to what we have studied so far, because other modules have to do with "how can we come up with new ways"- this has to do with WE NEED TO STOP.
6. Critical
Analyze how this challenges your thinking/assumptions. (How did this change your thinking? Did it? Why?)
From this podcast I was educated on how much grassland we actually have, yes we have a lot but think about how much more we use to have.. or how much we can conserve if we do allow people like Jim Howell to buy up the areas that aren't at their peak, and allow him to bring them back to their full potential.
